The 2013 Class A State Tournament is down to the title bout – Minneapolis Cobras vs. St. Paul Shamrocks at noon Sunday. Both teams are vying for their first ever State championship. A win for the Shamrocks means they hoist the trophy, while the Cobras need to win two after playing two today.

The Shamrocks earned a trip to the title match with an 8-5, 11-inning win over the Cobras, while the Cobras then beat St. Louis Park 12-11. SLP is the third place team out of Class A.

Four teams, six games, one title.

Okay, maybe seven games with the “if necessary” game, but that’s what it’s come down to for the 2013 Class A State Tournament being held at Red Haddox Field in Bloomington.

The Minneapolis Cobras will take on the Bloomington Bandits this Friday at 6 p.m. followed by an 8:30 p.m. tilt between the St. Louis Park Town Team and the St. Paul Shamrocks. Winners and losers from Friday will face off Saturday and a champion will be crowned Sunday.

The Cobras earned a trip to “final four” with a 2-0 shutout over the Stockmen’s Irish. Bloomington took its home field advantage en route to a convincing 13-3 win over the Minneapolis Patriots and a 5-1 victory over the St. Anthony Hogs. St. Louis Park took care of Blue Package Delivery with a 9-5 win, while the Shamrocks made it look easy against Tri City Shark, 15-3. But the Shamrocks shocked many with a 2-0 win over last year’s title winner Minnetonka, which has also won seven of the last 10 Class A championships.

So who will win this year’s title?

Well, you’ve got a 25-percent chance at it and your guess is as good as mine, so just for fun I’ll take the Cobras over the Shamrocks in a classic 9-8 slugfest. (I guess there’s a little bias there, too. Good luck, Gunz.)

If it comes down to the Cobras and Shamrocks, at least we’ll know that one team will walk away with its first ever State title. St. Louis Park is fighting for its third title as it won it all in 2002 and 2008, while the Bandits are looking for a first.

Good luck to all the Class A guys this weekend.
