Red-hot Miesville looks to defend Class B state title

Miesville will look to win its second-straight championship as the Class B state amateur baseball tournament gets underway Friday in Green Isle, Hamburg and Norwood Young America.

The top-ranked Mudhens (31-3) have a 21-game winning streak going into the double-elimination state tournament. They pounded Hastings 11-1 and 12-3 in the Section 1B playoffs to advance.

Miesville opens state tournament play Sunday against Champlin at 2:30 p.m. in Norwood.  Champlin (22-18) made the final four of Section 4B by taking two of three games from Monticello, but the Logators also fell to Forest Lake 3-0 and Blaine 2-1 in the final four.

Miesville has a loaded lineup with Matt Van Der Bosch, Nate Hammes and Brian Sprout all hitting over .400 at the plate. Charles Bruchu, Ronnie Sweeny and Joey Werner each hit .350 or better.

Pitching also produces for the defending state champions. Steve Maher has a 1.26 ERA while Jacob Dickmeyer and Shannon Ahern allow 1.54 and 1.71 earned runs respectively.

Champlin has some power in its lineup with Jeff Heuer hitting .406 while Zach Heckert, Ryan Lust, Trent Palmer and Matt Marek all hit .300 or higher.

Chaska, Cold Spring get first pitch Friday

Tournament play begins with Chaska and Cold Spring Friday at 5 p.m. in Green Isle. Chaska (25-9) comes in with back-to-back wins over Shakopee and Burnsville in the Section 3B tournament.  Cold Spring (26-4) comes in off a 3-1 loss in Section 2B to Moorhead.

Chanhassen opens Friday with Sauk Rapids

The Chanhassen Red Birds will open against Sauk Rapids with the second game of the tournament Friday at 7 p.m. in Green Isle. Chanhassen has shut out its last two opponents with a 5-0 win over Prior Lake and 6-0 over Eagan in the Section 3B tournament. Sauk Rapids comes in off a 4-1 loss to Beaudreau’s Saints of St. Cloud in the Section 2B tournament.

Saturday’s matchups

Moorhead faces Shakopee, which took two of three games against Chaska in Section 3B. The Brewers and Indians meet at 1 p .m. in Hamburg.

Dundas will open its fourth-straight state tournament appearance with Forest Lake at 4 p.m. in Hamburg. It will mark the fourth meeting between the clubs with Forest Lake holding a 2-1 edge in the series.

Blaine (34-7) has a four-game winning streak going into the tournament and will open with Northfield on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Hamburg. Northfield swept the Rochester Royals 5-3 and 11-0 to secure a state tournament spot.

Eagan, Saints meet in Sunday matinee

St. Cloud Beaudreau’s Bar faces Eagan at noon in Norwood. The Saints split their last two games of the Section 2B tournament but made their fourth-straight state appearance. The Bandits beat Dundas in an exhibition game between the section and state tournaments.

Later Rounds

Winning teams will meet in the second round Aug. 25 followed by a third-round showdown Aug. 27 with all games in Green Isle. Final rounds take place Labor Day Weekend in Hamburg.
