Longtime Green Isle player/manager “Whitey” Herd passes

The Arlington-Gaylord-Green Isle area lost a great baseball man on Tuesday – Michael “Whitey” Herd. Below is his obituary and other information on his playing days for the Green Isle Irish.

Michael “Whitey” Allen Herd was born on July 1, 1960, in Gaylord, Minnesota. He was the son of Don and Mary Eileen (O’Neil) Herd. Whitey was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth, both at St. Brendan’s Catholic Church in Green Isle. He received his education in Arlington and was a 1978 graduate of the Arlington High School. Whitey furthered his education at Mankato State University and earned a Degree in Business Administration with a Minor in Economics, graduating in 1982.

On June 14, 1986, Whitey was united in marriage to Kris Kuphal at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Gaylord. After their marriage the couple resided in Gaylord. This union was blessed with two sons. Whitey and Kris shared 27 years of marriage. He was employed with the Principal Financial Group for more than 25 years.

Whitey was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Gaylord.

Whitey enjoyed baseball, coaching for youth organizations and high school athletes, hunting, and having a general passion for all sports. He played for the Green Isle Irish for 35 years and then coached the team for three years. Whitey was a referee for basketball and an umpire for baseball. He especially loved watching his sons play ball. Whitey loved spending time with his family and friends.

Whitey passed away suddenly on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at the Sibley Medical Center in Arlington at the age of 52 years. Blessed be his memory.

Wife, Kris Herd of Gaylord, MN;

Sons, Zach Herd of Mankato, MN, and

Lucas Herd of Mankato, MN;

Mother, Mary Eileen Herd of Green Isle, MN;

Siblings, John Herd and his wife, Marneé of Alexandria, MN, and James Herd and his wife, Lisa of Waconia, MN;

Father-In-Law and Mother-In-Law, Karl and Sue Kuphal of Gaylord, MN;

Nieces, Nephews, other relatives and friends.

Whitey was preceded in death by his Father, Don Herd.
