Lighting up Minnesota’s pastime

As Shoeless Joe Jackson said in Field of Dreams, “What’s with the lights? … Makes it harder to see the ball.”

Although Shoeless Joe may be right in his opinion that lights make it harder to see the ball, Ray Kinsella proved a point in saying, “Yeah, well, the owners found that more people can attend night games.” Replied by Shoeless Joe shaking his head and saying, “Owners…”

Town teams in Minnesota may not have owners, but the majority of teams do find it beneficial to play night games because, well, players aren’t getting paid to play amateur ball anymore and they’re not about to quit their day jobs. That being the case, it’s worth noting that roughly 183 of the State’s 305 town teams have lights at their home ballpark.

A few interesting nuggets of information from those numbers include none of the 12 teams in the Lake & Pine League have lights, while the Corn Belt, Lakewood, Park National (all use Parade Stadium) and Southern Minny are the only leagues that have lights at every ballpark. The MBA’s largest league – Victory – has only four of its 20 ballparks with lights.

It’s also clear that the majority of teams with lights populate the metro and gradually dissipate as that radius moves to rural Minnesota. Outside of Class A’s 80% of fields with lights, metro-suburban Minnesota ranks second among the geography with lighted fields (70%, 62/89), while northern Minnesota’s 50 teams yield only 22 fields with lights (44%).

I’m sure there are a few mistakes in this list, so we’ll keep it fluid. Any time I receive a correction, I will post an update at the top of the article.

*Margin of error is +/- 5%. Another big thanks to Jeff Janzen of the Coaches Directory for doing the legwork in gathering this data. A few ballparks were guessed to have lights or not by whether or not they hosted night games. If you have any corrections to the list, please contact me at siewertc@csp.edu or leave a comment on our Facebook page.

Without further ado, here is the list of teams – sorted by league – with their designation of lights or not. Parentheses indicate (teams with lights/total number of teams).
