TOWN TEAM BALL SPECIAL TRIBUTE

(St. Martin Martins on Friday June 23 they were hosting the Roscoe Rangers)

We’d like to ask everyone who is able to please stand and the two teams to line up on the baselines for an honorary tribute

Town ball as we know it came into existence in 1924. It is now made up of over 300 active town ball teams playing in over 30 leagues throughout Minnesota.

Baseball is known as America’s pastime.

It’s a game played from the heart.

A game that unites families and communities.

A game our fathers taught us and a game our mothers cheer for.

Sure, everyone plays to win.

But for most, we play for far more than that.

We play to spend time with our children

Our brothers

Our cousins and our friends.

We play for the dugout chatter and the team camaraderie.

We play for the memories made after the game spending time with the team.

Memories made that will last a lifetime

Tonight, we celebrate baseball.

We honor all the legendary players of our past, we bless our current players and we educate and empower those who are to come.

We pray that their hearts and minds learn the best there is to know about the game.

That they learn baseball is a game about character and respect more than it is about winning and losing.

It’s a game that teaches you to never give up,

Because you know the last swing could win the game.

And that sometimes, it’s not how hard you hit the ball, but how fast you run to first.

It’s about the kids watching you play, because whether they are your own or not, you want to set the best example for them.

The idea for tonight’s honorary game came up after My grandpa, Smiley Lieser passed away this past winter. As an avid baseball player and fan, we wanted to honor him somehow. For those who knew Smiley, you know he was about community and a love of the game no matter what team was playing.

But just as we lost Smiley, we’ve all lost many before him. At this time 9 years ago the baseball community lost three great men: Mitch Tokach, a former player of the Roscoe Rangers, and  Joey Lieser and Elmer Arceneau, former players for the St. Martin Martins and beloved grandfathers of current players.

The reality is, no matter what community we are from, no matter what team we play or cheer for, we all have teammates playing the game upstairs in Heaven.

So at this time, let’s please take a moment of silence to remember all of our angels in the outfield.

(Moment of Silence)

We may wear different colors.

We may cheer for different teams.

But at the end of the day we all play for the same thing — a love of the game.

Now we’d like to ask that everyone join in singing take me out to the ball game as a community of baseball fans.

Thank you, Cari May for sharing
