Hampton Cardinals make return after a few years absence

It was a beautiful Wednesday night at a well-attended John Burch Park in Cannon Falls for the ballgame between Cannon Falls and Hampton.

Nick’s Diner sponsored the game, which meant $1 hotdogs and beers, and 50 cents for popcorn. It was a great game to watch from the pressbox with Brock, a three sport athlete from the local high school, and Kelsey, student at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

The highlight of the night was Keith Myers’ performance for the Bears to lead them to a 5-0 victory. The former St. Paul Saint went the whole length of the game for nine shutout innings with 10 strikeouts and allowed only five hits.

“You get more crafty when you get older,” Myers jokingly said about his performance. Along to help him was Taylor Pagel who went 3-for-4 with a homerun and two RBIs.

A big story of the season in the Classic Cannon Valley League is the comeback of the Hampton Cardinals. After folding a few years ago due to lack of players, Adrian Hebig managed to get some players together and bring a team back to Hampton.

“I met up with Dan Swanson one day and asked about forming an amateur baseball team,” Hebig said. “He told about the Hampton team that had folded and it was a good spot for our guys.”

Hebig coached a majority of the guys on the team from Legion baseball. He still coaches Legion for kids up to 16, which is how he knows most of his players on the Cardinals. Hebig and his sons, Rhett and Austin, managed to get enough players to form a team in Hampton again.

“I like amateur baseball because it is a great league for these guys to be in,” Hebig said. “Everyone is respectful and the environment is just great for these kids to be in. We have kids from Hastings, Eagan, Apple Valley, Hampton and other towns, and they just like playing together.”

For Hebig, playing with his sons on the same team is what his dream has been, and now it has come true with the Hampton Cardinals.
