The Victoria Vic’s displayed power hitting and strong defense Sunday evening at Lions Park in Victoria as they took down the No. 5 ranked Class A Lyon’s Pub Warriors. The Vics of the River Valley League scored 10 runs on 16 hits.

The Vic’s offense was highlighted by two homeruns from right fielder Corey Eckhoff. Eckhoff went 3-for-4 at the plate and batted in six runs.

“Lyon’s Pub comes out and challenges with good pitching so I came up ready to hit. I got a couple pitches to hit and just took advantage of a couple mistakes,” said Eckhoff about his two homeruns that were both smashed over the left field fence.

Victoria had great contribution all throughout the lineup. Leadoff hitter Cole Sweeney had two hits and two RBI. Greg Winegarden, Sam Rothstein, Eckhoff, Carter Schmidt, and Chris Volkman (4-for-4) also had multiple hits.

Victoria got its scoring started in the second inning from a sacrifice fly off the bat of Eckhoff, scoring Matt Mann, who walked to start off the inning. Sweeney then hit a single to centerfield that plated two more runs, increasing the lead to 3-1.

The Vic’s then scored three in the third from the three-run bomb from Eckhoff, one in the fourth, another two from the second Eckhoff dinger, and the final run in the sixth pushing the lead to 10-1.

Eckhoff, who batted seventh, commented on the Vics offense: “We’re pretty blessed with our lineup. We have strong power from three to seven, and we don’t exactly play small ball.”

Not only did the Vic’s bats show up the play, the defense also played a great game. Starting pitcher Corey Binger pitched seven strong innings to record the win. Binger gave up one run on seven hits and also notched three strikeouts. Conner Ostreich pitched the final two innings, giving up just two hits.

“The defense really came up big, fielding all the ground balls and making sure to keep balls in front. It’s been good young pitching, throwing a lot of strikes,” said Eckhoff on the Vic’s defensive play.

Lyon’s Pub was led by Brett Doran, who went 2-for-4. Starting pitcher Ryne McNary knocked in the Warriors only run in the game off a hard hit double to right centerfield in the second inning. McNary gave up nine runs in five innings pitched, receiving the loss.

With the win, the No. 3 ranked Class B Vic’s recorded their eighth win of the season, moving to 8-2. Lyon’s Pub moves to 11-6 on the season.
