Dundas claims 2015 Class B state title

Cold Spring, Minn. – The Dundas Dukes claimed the 2015 Class B state championship, defeating the Moorhead Brewers 8-2 on Monday. 

A four-run second inning proved the be the difference for the Dukes as they cruised the rest of the way behind a complete game performance by starting pitcher Matt Neuger. 

Left fielder Tyler Jones was named the tournament MVP. 


The Dukes took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Carson Jones doubled, Tyler Jones walked and Nate Van Roekel walked to load the bases. Carson Jones then scored on a wild pitch.

In the second, Dundas put up four runs to take a comfortable 5-0 advantage. Todd Mathison singled, Adam Johnson walked and Josh Maus laid down a sac bunt to advance the runners into scoring position. Pat Wadzinski was hit by a pitch to load the bases, which ended Moorhead starter Dylan Deavy’s day on the bump. David Ernst came in relief and gave up a two-run double to Carson Jones. Tyler Jones ensued with a two-run triple to make it 5-0 Dundas.

The Dukes added to their lead with a run in the third. Johnson doubled, Maus walked and Wadzinski walked to load the bases. Carson Jones then reached on a fielder’s choice to score Johnson.

The Brewers ended the shutout in the bottom of the third with a run. Mike Peschel singled followed by a Nick Colwell RBI double.

To start the fifth frame, Mathison singled, Johnson singled and Maus laid down another sac bunt. Wadzionski then hit a sac fly to center to score Mathison.

In the eighth, Wadzinski reached on a bunt single, Tyler Jones singled and Van Roekel singled to score Wadzinski.

Moorhead answered in the bottom half as Derek Dormanen singled and later scored on a Chris Coste single, but that was it for the Brewers and the score stood 8-2 for a final.

Matt Neuger pitched all nine for the Dukes, allowing two runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Mathison led the way at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs.

Carson Jones (2-5, 2 R, 3 RBI), Tyler Jones (2-4, 2 RBI, 3B, BB), Van Roekel (2-3, RBI, 2 BB) and Johnson (2-3, 2 R, 2B, 2 BB) also had multiple hits.

Deavy suffered the loss after just one and one-third innings. Ernst pitched the rest of the way. Both pitchers allowed four runs.

The state championship is the fifth in program history for Dundas. The Dukes previously claimed state titles in 1982, 1988, 1998 and 1999.

Jones hit .571 (12-21) with 5 runs, 5 RBI, 2 doubles, 2 triples, 2 walks, 2 stolen bases and did not strikeout in five games. He also had 9 putouts and 1 assist as the left fielder.
