Avon’s Caleb Curry hit a game-winning home run in the 11th inning as the Lakers beat St. Martin 2-1 in Class C tournament action on Sunday in Miesville.

St. Martin loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the 11th after two walks and a single, but Zach Moritz hit a pop fly as Lakers’ second baseman Ryan Janzen grabbed the game-winning out.

St. Martin grabbed the lead first in the game, 1-1, during the first inning on Saturday in Faribault before rain shut things down early in the game. Kyle Lieser hit a sacrifice fly for the Martins, which sent home Moritz. The Martins had one run on one hit while the Lakers had three hits at the time of the rain delay in the second inning.

Bats quieted on Sunday when the game resumed as it became a pitching duel between the two teams in ensuing innings when the scene shifted to Miesville. Avon tied the game 1-1 in the top of the seventh inning with a double by Elian Mezquita to the left field wall. Cody Stich ran home for the game-tying score.

The Lakers loaded the bases in the top of the eighth inning with one out on Curry’s single. St. Martin shut the door on the Lakers’ scoring  chance with a double play as the game eventually headed to extra innings.

Matt Swanson, a draft pick from the Upsala Blue Jays, struck out six in six innings for the Lakers. He also allowed only one hit and walked three batters.

Mitch McIntyre, who started the game for Avon, went five innings with seven strikeouts and four walks. He allowed one run on five hits.

Scott Lieser went the distance for St. Martin with 10 strikeouts in 11 innings. He allowed one earned run on eight hits, and he walked one batter.

Avon will play the St. Patrick Irish next on Saturday, Sept. 3 in Dundas.
