Class C Rankings: July 26 Edition

–by Brett Kruschke

As the calendar gets ready to flip to August — aka state tournament time — the defending champion Plato Bluejays are poised to defend their title. It’s the second-straight No. 1 ranking for the pride of the Crow River Valley League. The Sartell Muskies are hot on their trail, however, with 18 straight wins.

Believe it or not, this is the last Class C rankings of the year. The final article from our pollsters will be a “Class C State Tournament Prognosticators” article, as CJ Siewert orchestrated last year, due out a few days before the state tournament to serve as a preview and to whet your appetite for the real deal.

  1. Plato Bluejays – Plato has won four straight since the last poll, including a 7-3 win over Hamburg. The Bluejays appear ready for the playoffs.
  2. Sartell Muskies – Sartell is 23-2 and has won 18 straight, led by a dominant pitching staff that includes David Deminsky (7-0, 1.11 ERA), John Schumer (6-1, 0.76) and Adam Wenker (4-1, 0.37).
  3. Nisswa Lightning – Nisswa beat Fort Ripley 6-1 in the Victory League North Division playoffs and right now is on the top of the heap in an excellent Region 8C field.
  4. Jordan Brewers – Jordan has won six in a row since the last poll.
  5. Blue Earth Pirates – The Pirates have gone 3-0 since the last poll, including a 5-2 win over the Waterville Indians, who have been ranked.
  6. Green Isle Irish – They have four straight wins after four straight losses, all to good teams, including the Waconia Lakers, who deserve top-10 consideration.
  7. Morris Eagles – Morris is 19-1 after two more wins, 9-0 over the Appleton A’s and 6-4 over the Clinton Cards.
  8. Fort Ripley Rebels – Fort Ripley is one of the favorites in Region 8C, which begins this weekend in Pierz and then moves to Freeport for the final two weekends.
  9. Sobieski Skis – The Skis have been floating under the radar a bit this season while Nisswa and Fort Ripley have garnered more attention in the Victory League. But Tyler Jendro is back. They are strong defensively and their lineup is solid.
  10. Milroy Yankees – Milroy knocked off the Cold Spring Springers, a Class B power, 4-3. They also have a loss to a very good Raymond Rockets team that should receive honorable mention in the poll, and a 7-5 victory over Lamberton, another top 10 team.

1.  Plato.  The defending champs remain on top.

2.  Nisswa.  Finally avenged their regular season losses to Fort Ripley in league playoffs. Region 8C begins this weekend, where anything can happen.

3.  Sartell.  Only two losses and their pitching remains outstanding. Hearing good reports from a former teammate that now umps in the area.

4.  Blue Earth.  The Pirates are continuing to win ball games and have a good mix of vets and younger players to make another run.

5. New Market. (Editor’s note: Initially forgot to include them so due to the late add, no commentary.)

6.  Jordan.  Seven wins in a row for the Brewers, locking up the #1 seed in Region 6C. As stated in every poll, their experience and tough schedule puts them in position to perform in August.

7.  Green Isle.  After a string of losses (to solid teams), the Irish drop a few slots. With as many games as they play, it is bound to happen. Region 7C starts soon and is always competitive.

8.  Morris.  Morris has just one loss and the pitching has been there all year.

9.  Raymond.  A solid showing in the Coors Light Classic and a win over the Milroy Yankees keep Raymond in the mix.

10.  Milroy Yankees.  Milroy has had a good year and has wins over Class B Cold Spring and Marshall in recent games.

  1. Plato (21-3):  17 wins in a row, defending champions, they are my new #1.
  2.  Sartell (23-2):  I still love the Muskies, 3-0 since our last poll with two wins over Clear Lake and a 1-0 win over Foley.
  3. Nisswa (20-2):  Also went 3-0 since the last poll, with two of those wins coming over Fort Ripley, 6-2 and 6-1.
  4. Blue Earth (22-3):  The Pirates went 5-0 in the last two weeks with wins over Cleveland, Waterville, Lake Crystal, Worthington and Minnesota Lake.
  5. Jordan (28-6):  Winners of seven in a row, these guys are going to be in the hunt when all is said and done.
  6. Morris (19-1):  Heading into the playoffs with one loss is pretty impressive.
  7. Lamberton (23-5):  Winners of six in a row, including the New Ulm Brewers 8-1 on Sunday.
  8. New Market (25-5):  3-1 in the last two weeks, with the loss coming to Fairbault, 5-4.
  9. Green Isle (24-7):  Three losses in a row since our last poll, but rebounded with four straight wins. Their losses came at the hands of Hutchinson, Waconia and Miesville.
  10. Milroy Yankees (22-7):  This is a good Yankee team; came away with a very impressive 4-3 win over the Cold Spring Springers on Sunday.

One the bubble:  Worthington, Fairmont, Fort Ripley, Waconia, Sobieski
