Class C rankings – Aug. 1

Posted on Aug. 1, 2014 by CJ Siewert

Here are the final Class C rankings of the season. We may have a preview of the state tournament before it begins Aug. 15. Stay tuned.

Also, we welcome MBA intern Erik Steffenson to the committee. He’s been closely following teams around the state for long enough this season that his input is a valuable addition to the rankings.

Andy Johnson – Stewartville-Racine

1. Maple Lake

2. Sartell Muskies

3. Spring Hill

4. Jordan

5. Waseca

6. Winsted

7. Green Isle

8. Plato

9. Jackson

10. Blue Earth

Notes: A Victory League team probably belongs there but I don’t know who to put in there between Lastrup, Fort Ripley, Sobieski and Nisswa. It would have been easy before last weekend but now they’ve all beaten each other. So I threw in Jackson (tough loss the other night to Fairmont) and Blue Earth (always a solid team).

Erik Steffenson – Hastings

1. Maple Lake

2. Sartell

3. Green Isle – They’ve had a strong performance throughout the season

4. Jordan – Not only do they play in a competitive league, but they have played very quality competition on their schedule

5. Waseca – Playing in a tough region and seeded first

6. Spring Hill – Has played very well and deserves this spot

7. Jackson – Has seldom showed any weak games

8. Fort Ripley – Record may throw off others, but playing teams like Nisswa and Sobieski. They’ve proven to make a run for state

9. Sobieski – Went 13-0 in league play and lost their first league game to Fort Ripley on Sunday

10. Winsted – There are a few teams that come close for this spot. Winsted came out first in its league and I believe will be contending with Green Isle for the 7C top spot

Scott Hollingsworth – Jordan

1. Maple Lake (26-3) – 1 win from return trip to State Tournament

2. Spring Hill (18-2) – Enter playoffs on 7 game winning streak

3. Green Isle (28-4) – Getting better as the season goes on

4. Sartell (21-4) – Amping up to make a title defense

5. Jordan (27-8) – Always been a playoff team

6. Waseca (26-3) – 23 straight wins before losing to a good Rochester Royals team

7. Nimrod (19-2) – #1 seed as playoffs begin tonight

8. Mora (23-3) – 15 game winning streak into playoffs

9. New Market (18-5) – Good live arms ready for region play

10. Winsted (20-4) – Won 18 of the last 19

Jason Kuerschner – Cologne

1. Maple Lake Lakers – 26-3 Gearing up for a playoff run

2. Sartell Muskies – 21-4 Defending Champs tough to beat

3. Jordan Brewers – 27-8 dominating the Class “C”, only 1 loss in “C”

4. Green Isle Irish – 28-4 one win away from qualifying for state

5. Spring Hill Chargers – 18-2 gearing up for their run in playoffs

6. Jackson Bulls – 23-2 two hiccups to Fairmont

7. Waseca Braves – 25-2 looking tough in their quest for the State tourney

8. Winsted Wildcats – 19-4 one win from qualifying for state

9. Bertha Blazers – 20-5 Gearing up for their Region run

10. Owatonna Aces – 25-4

Honorable mention – Lastrup & Fort Ripley (both have qualified for state), Nisswa & Sobieski – backs are against the wall win or go home.

CJ Siewert – St. Peter

1. Maple Lake Lakers – 26-3, set the tone for playoffs with a dominating win Wednesday in the first round. Will be interesting to see what seed they get for state out of a tough region

2. Spring Hill Chargers – 18-2, they’ve been at the top of the rankings all year, now it’s time to prove it

3. Jordan Brewers – 27-8, the favorite in Region 6 and a veteran team at state

4. Sartell Muskies – 21-4, there hasn’t been a back-to-back Class C state champion in the 12 years of its existence

5. Green Isle Irish- 28-4, found a way to win its first region game despite 9 errors (yes, NINE errors)

6. Waseca Braves – 26-3, top seed in Region 5, but only a two-run win against the No. 8 seed in the first round

7. Jackson Bulls – 23-2, have to get past Fairmont in regions who’ve handed them their only losses of the season

8. Fort Ripley Rebels – 14-8, beat Region 8 top seed Sobieski to earn a trip to state

9. Mora Blue Devils – 23-3, my pick out of Region 1, along with Sartell

10. New Ulm Brewers – 16-4 in league play, top seed in Region 2 and have the pitching to make a run

Overall rankings: Aug. 1

1. Maple Lake Lakers – 50

2. Sartell Muskies – 41

3. Spring Hill Chargers – 37

4. Jordan Brewers – 36

5. Green Isle Irish – 33
