Class B special meeting set for Feb. 21

If you’ve followed the goings-on of Minnesota amateur baseball the past few months, its safe to say that differing opinions of what the Class B state tournament format should entail have garnered most of the attention.

All of those opinions will have their time to be heard now as the Board of Directors has called for a special meeting with each Class B team to be held 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 21 at the St. Cloud Eastside VFW.

One representative from each Class B team is allowed to speak on behalf of their respective team considering the state tourney format. Once all the team representatives have spoken, a vote of all Class B teams will determine the format for this year’s state tournament, held in Cold Spring and Watkins.

At the end of last year, the Board voted to retain the 16-team single elimination format, which was put in place for the 2014 tournament. By judging comments posted to social media sites and simple chatter amongst Class B teams, it seems fair to say that some sort of double elimination format is the favorable option. But will that involve an eight-team field with double elimination throughout, or a 16-team field with double elimination after the first round?

“Teams should come prepared to talk relative to a 16-team single elimination or an eight-team double elimination format,” said Secretary Dave Hartmann. “If there are other alternatives we will discuss those at the meeting. We want an overall perspctive from Class B teams and what their thoughts are. We really want to have a rep from every team in Class B and that can be a manager or a player or someone from the association to be able to vote and speak.”

Hartmann also said the Board will not accept proxy votes.

Many members of the Class B community have felt that their opinions have been pushed aside by the Board, but the Feb. 21 special meeting is the perfect opportunity to have those opinions heard and discussed. If you feel the current state tournament format is wrong, now is the time to get it right.
