Class B rankings: Moorhead moves past Blaine

There was quite a bit of movement in this set of rankings. Most notably Moorhead flipped with Blaine for the No. 2 ranking. Elko saw its ranking drop by two spots and Champlin Park gained a spot.

As we head into the postseason, take a look at what our experts thought about the teams in the hunt for a state tournament trip.

Matt Marek —  Champlin Park LoGators

1. Chanhassen Redbirds —  Chanassen swept their weekend tourney with wins over Moorhead and (1-0) and Cold Spring (3-2). After a perfect June, they finally fell to Victoria 2-1, but the train keeps rolling. After a one-game stint with Sioux Falls, John Straka is back to lead the charge down the home stretch.

2. Moorhead Brewers —  Brewers have won 12 of 13 games and have secured the No. 1 spot in the section with the Cold Spring ruling. Brewers have eight of nine regulars hitting above .345 and Cole Christensen and David Ernst serving as a formidable 1-2 on the mound. Will this be the year?

3. Miesville Mudhens —  Miesville has taken off as of late, rattling off 16 of 17 before falling to Rochester on Friday.

4. Blaine Fusion —  A couple of curious close calls to Centennial and Andover, coupled with a loss to Coon Rapids drops the Fusion down a notch, but get ready for the Fusion to take off down the stretch.

5. Champlin Park LoGators —  Gators are riding a stretch of 12 wins in 13 games heading into Tuesday’s game with Coon Rapids with wins over the Minneapolis Mudcats and a 12-0 run-rule victory over Chaska. With arguably the best overall player in the state in Sam Riola and a deep roster, the Gators will look to stay hot down the stretch. Gators are 10-4 against ranked Class A and B teams this year.

6. Cold Spring Springers —  RIP Springers. A sad day to see the Springers, among others, left out of the playoffs.

7. Victoria Vics —  In case you missed it, the Vics got hot. Winners of nine of 11, including a win over Chanhassen, move them up in my rankings … now about that Excelsior loss …

8. Chaska Cubs — A couple of teams on rough stretches, as the Cubs have dropped four of five after a seven-game win streak. It doesn’t get any easier down the stretch, as the Cubbies have Chanhassen, St. Anthony, Victoria and Minnetonka left on the schedule.

9. Elko Express —  Express are 2-6 in their last eight with three straight losses to defending C runner-up St. Patrick, Lyon’s Pub and Miesville. Outside of Miesville in Section 1, I feel like the three other state tournament spots are WIDE open.

10. Burnsville Bobcats —  The Bobcats have picked it up as of late sweeping Chaska, Prior Lake and Shakopee, while also playing Chanhassen tough. Their win over Anoka edges them into the 10-spot over the Bucs.

Kelly McMonagle — Moorhead

1. Chanhassen Red Birds —  A couple of one-run wins over Cold Spring and Moorhead this past weekend followed up by section victories against Shakopee and Chaska.  Red Birds keep rolling with only two losses on the season as they look to take the top seed from Section 3B into their third defense of the state Class B title.

2. Blaine Fusion —  The Fusion got back into the winning column beating Anoka after rare back-to-back losses to Coon Rapids and Forest Lake has them chasing Champlin in Section 4B.  Three straight road section games to close out the week before hosting the Showdown with the LoGators next Thursday.

3. Moorhead Brewers —  Brewers nine-game winning streak snapped by the 1-0 loss to Chanhassen last Friday.  They bounced back Saturday with a 3-2 victory over Eagan and defended their Football Toss Relay championship easily at Storm/Red Bird Stadium later that evening.  Cold Spring’s playoff ban leaves a clear path for the top seed in Section 2B with 3 games to play.

4. Miesville Mudhens —  Mudhens earned the top seed in the meat grinder that is Section 1B.  They close out the season with a couple of testy exhibition matchups with Champlin and Blaine after Sunday’s section game against Dundas. All games at Jack Ruhr Stadium.

5.  Cold Spring Springers —

6. Champlin Park LoGators — The LoGators play everyone and everywhere no matter Class A, B, or C. From Nimrod to South St. Paul they have racked up 25 wins on the season and sit at the top of the Section 4B standings with three road section games against Forest Lake, Anoka and Blaine left to play.

7.  Elko Express —  The Express sit right behind Miesville in Section 1B with hopes to secure the No. 2 seed as they host Rochester and Hampton this weekend.

8. Anoka Bucs — The Bucs are right in the mix near the top of Section 4B and close out their season hosting Champlin and Andover.  Run for cover if the Jolly Roger is flying in a port near you.

9. Victoria Vics — The Vics have taken down the top team in Section 3B in the last two weeks but also suffered a loss to the team at the bottom of the Section 3B standings. They close out the season with three home section games against Burnsville, Chaska and round two with Chanhassen.

10. Three-way tie between Chaska, Coon Rapids, and Rochester.  Any of these three teams has the talent and ability to make a run in the playoffs and probably all three will.
