Class B Friday roundup in Hamburg: Straka, Chanhassen pick up 3rd state win in pitcher’s duel with Ahern

With the third straight state tournament win by pitcher John Straka, three-time Class B defending champion Chanhassen rallied to defeat Miesville 3-2 In front of a crowd of 298 on Friday night at Hawk Field in Hamburg.

Miesville took a 1-0 lead in top of first inning. Max Gamm led off with single to center, stole second and third and scored on RBI ground out by Matt Van Der Bosch.

Chanhassen finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth, scoring three runs and taking a 3-1 lead

The Redbirds tied it 1-1 on single by Justin Arnold, a fielders’ choice by Riley Johnson and back-to-back walks to Michael Jurgella and Zach Hoffmann. 

Ben Livorsi walked to drive in another run and give Chanhassen a 2-1 lead.

Justin Anderson was hit by pitch to drive in the game-winning run to make it 3-1.

Miesville finished off the scoring with a run in top of ninth. Joey Werner walked, Van Der Bosch singled, and Austin LaDoux drove in Werner with a single.

But Straka struck out the final batter for the complete game 3-2 win.

Straka finished with a five-hitter, walked two and struck out six.

Miesville starting pitcher Riley Ahern, who won the first two games for the Mudhens and had a no-hitter going through four innings, lasted 7 2/3 innings and allowed just two hits, while walking four and striking out eight.

Miesville relief pitcher Thomas Shogren pitched the last third of an inning.

Aaron Pfaff (1-for-4) and Justin Arnold (1-for-3, run) had the lone hits for the Redbirds.

Van Der Bosch led Miesville at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Gamm and LaDoux went 1-for-4. Jake Smith batted 1-for-3.

The Mudhens, who won state in 2016 and 2017, next face the winner of Champlin Park and New Market at 7 p.m. Saturday at Waconia.

The winner will meet Chanhassen at 7 p.m. Sunday at Chaska.
