The 2022 Class A State Tournament got underway in thrilling fashion Friday night.

The St. Anthony Hogs beat the St. Paul Hops 4-1 in 10 innings at Palm Field in St. Anthony, site of all Class A tournament games.

A trio led the way for St. Anthony. Kris Long drove in the game-winning run and recorded two outfield assists. Ryan Ferkinhoff went 2-for-4 and Matt Tappe pitched five innings of shutout baseball with six strikeouts.

St. Anthony is making its 10th appearance at state and fifth in a row. The Hogs have won three straight first-round games.

The Hops were established in 2014. They made their state tournament debut in 2020 and haven’t missed since, though they seek their first win.

St. Anthony is the first of eight teams to advance to the double-elimination portion of the tournament. It plays 7 p.m. Aug. 13 against the winner of the May 7 matchup between the Minneapolis Angels and Minneapolis Millers.
