Central Minnesota Town Ball Report: Kimball falls short in run at second straight title

Back for a sixth season as a contributing writer for the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Association with your weekly amateur baseball (Town Team) baseball reports. Including not only game summaries, but upcoming schedules, league standings. Tournament summaries and an occasional special interest feature. 95th ANNUAL STATE AMATEUR TOURNAMENT 2018

REGION 2B TEAMS (LAKEWOOD TEAMS)

COLD SPRING SPRINGERS 1, FOREST LAKE BREWERS 0

The Springers of the Lakewood League and Region 2B defeated their foe the Brewers of the Metro Minny League and Region 4B.

The Springers did collect 10 hits, but just one run was all the support that their veteran pitcher needed. The Springers’ veteran right-hander, Zach Femrite started on the mound. He threw a complete game to earn the win. He gave up six hits, issued one walk and he recorded six strikeouts and he was backed by the Springers’ solid defense.

The Springers put up the lone run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Designated hitter Brian Hansen had a double to right center field and Jordan Barth drilled a single through the infield to score the games only run of the game.

Hansen went 2-for-4 with a double and he scored a run and Barth went 2-for-4 for a RBI and some great play at shortstop. Drew Van Loy went 2-for-4, he continued to turn in great plays at third place. Joe Dempsey went 2-for-4 and Femrite went 1-for-4. Garrett Fuchs went 1-for-4 and he made some key defensive plays at second base.

The Brewers’ Mike Swenson started on the mound for the Brewers, he threw a complete game. He gave up 10 hits, surrendered one run and he recorded six strikeouts.

Jeff Brooks went 1-for-4 with a double and Adam Gemendon went 1-for-3 and he earned a walk. Mike Schultz went 1-for-4 and Dylan Dresel went 1-for-4. Jack Schmidt went 1-for-4 and Bryan Lippincott went 1-for-3.

MOORHEAD BREWERS 4, SAUK RAPIDS CYCLONES 2

The Brewers of Region 2B defeated their Section 2B rivals the Cyclones.

The Brewers’ Tanner Dahl started on the mound, he threw 7 2/3 innings to earn the win. He gave up 11 hits, issued one walk, surrendered two runs and he recorded seven strikeouts. Kyle Kingsley threw 1 1/3 innings in relief to earn the save. He gave up one hit and he recorded two strikeouts.

The Brewers collected just five hits, but they managed to get some timely hits. Denver Blinn went 2-for-4 with a triple and a double and he scored two runs. Mike Peschel went 2-for-4 with a double for a RBI, Joe Hallock went 1-for-4 with a RBI and Spencer Flaten earned a pair of walks and he scored a run.

The Cyclones’ Jason Hoppe started on the mound, he threw a complete game. He scattered five hits, issued two walks, surrendered four unearned runs and he recorded four strikeouts.

Veteran Scott Lochner had a good game, he went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Matt Meyer went 2-for-4 and he was hit by a pitch and Bjorn Hanson went 3-for-5. Luis Massa went 2-for-5 and he scored two runs and Mitch Loegering went 1-for-3 and he earned a walk. David Kroger went 1-for-4 and Hoppe went 1-for-4.

NORTHFIELD KNIGHTS 12, COLD SPRING SPRINGERS 6

The Knights of the Classic Cannon Valley League and Section 1B defeated the Springers of the Lakewood League and Section 2B.

The Knights collected 14 hits on their way to a state tourney win.

The Knights’ Jake Mathison started on the mound, he gave up nine hits, issued one walk, surrendered four runs and he recorded four strikeouts. Dave Picha closed it out with one inning of relief, he gave up four hits, two runs and he recorded one strikeout.

Nick Bornhauser went 2-for-4 with a double for two big RBIs, he earned three walks and he scored four runs. Thomas Meland went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Aldon Severson went 3-for-5 and he scored two runs. Mathison went 2-for-3 with a RBI, he earned a pair of walks and he scored three runs. Scott Benjamin went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Sam Maus went 1-for-5 with a RBI and he scored a run. Tommy McDonald went 1-for-4, he earned a walk and he scored a run and Tim Maus went 1-for-5 and he scored a run.

The Springers’ Drew Van Loy, started on the mound, he has been spotless nearly all season. He threw 4 2/3 innings, he gave up 10 hits, issued three walks, surrendered six runs and he recorded two strikeouts. He did work through the fourth inning with minimum amount of damage, but the fifth inning, combined with a couple unlikely walks, a couple of miscues, was enough for the Knights hitting to get started.

Justin Thompson threw 2 1/3 innings in relief, he gave up four hits, issued one walk and he gave up four runs. Joey Stock threw one inning in relief, he gave up two runs, issued two walks and he recorded one strikeout.

Brian Hansen had a good game, he went 2-for-5 with a home run for two RBIs. He gave the Springers a brief lead of 4-0 in the fourth inning. Van Loy went 2-for-5 with a RBI and he scored a run and Jeron Terres went 2-for-5 with a RBI. Jordan Barth went 1-for-5 with a double and he scored two runs and Joe Dempsey went 1-for-3 with a RBI. Zach Femrite went 1-for-4 and Brad Olson went 1-for-3 and he scored a run. Will Huls went 1-for-3 and he earned a walk and Joey Stock went 1-for-1 with a RBI.

MOORHEAD BREWERS 2,DUNDAS DUKES 1

The Brewers of Section 2B defeated the Dukes of the Classic Cannon Valley League and Section 1B.

The Brewers’ David Ernst started on the mound, he threw 5 2/3 innings to earn the win. He gave up just three hits, issued seven walks, gave up one run and he recorded three strikeouts. Kyle Kinsley threw 3 1/3 innings in relief to earn the save. He gave up three hits, issued two walks and he recorded one strikeout.

Joe Hallock went 2-for-4 with a double and Jeremy Peschel went 1-for-4 with a RBI. Tanner Adam had a sacrifice fly for a RBI and Mike Peschel went 1-for-4 and he scored a run. Denver Blinn went 1-for-4 and he earned a walk and Chris Clemenson went 1-for-4 and he scored a run. David Ernst went 1-for-3 and Derek Dormanen earned a walk.

The Dukes’ John McCaustlin started on the mound, he threw six innings, he gave up six hits, issued two walks, surrendered two runs and he recorded two strikeouts. Charlie Ruud threw three innings in relief, he gave up one hit and he recorded four strikeouts.

Mike Ludwig went 1-for-4 with a RBI and he earned a walk and Tyler Jones went 2-for-5. Jonathan Bishop went 1-for-3 and he earned a walk and Patrick Wadzinski went 1-for-4 and he earned a walk. Steve Loos went 1-for-5, Josh Maus earned  three walks and he scored a run, Hayden Lanoue earned a walk and Carson Jones earned a walk.

MOORHEAD BREWERS 5, NORTHFIELD KNIGHTS 4

The Brewers of the Section 2B defeated the Knights of the Classic Cannon Valley League and Section 1B.

The Brewers collected 12 hits on their way to a huge state tourney win over a very good foe.

The Brewers’ veteran right-hander, Jason Beilke started on the mound, he threw six innings, he scattered eight hits, he issued three walks, surrendered four runs and he recorded two strikeouts. Kyle Kingsley threw two innings in relief, he gave up two hits, gave up one run and he recorded one strikeout.

Tanner Adam went 2-for-4 with two doubles for two big RBIs and he scored a run. Spencer Flaten went 1-for-5 with a RBI and he scored a run and Denver Blinn went 3-for-5 with a stolen base. Derek Dormanen went 2-for-4, he earned a walk and he scored a run and Joe Hallock went 1-for-5. Mike Peschel went 1-for-4, he was hit by a pitch and he scored a run and Chris Clemenson went 1-for-2 and he earned two walks. Jeremy Peschel earned a walk, he was hit by a pitch and he had a sacrifice bunt and Turner Storm scored a run.

The Knights’ Eli Patrikus started on the mound, he threw eight innings, he gave up 12 hits, issued four walks, surrendered four runs and he recorded one strikeout. Jeremie Kruse threw 2/3 of an inning in relief, he was the pitcher of record. He issued one walk and he surrendered one run.

Aldon Severson went 3-for-5 with a RBI and Eric Pittman went 1-for-5 with a RBI. Tommy McDonald went 1-for-5 and he scored a run and Troy Deden went 1-for-3.

CHANHASSEN RED BIRDS 7, MOORHEAD BREWERS 2

The Red Birds of the River Valley East League and Section 3B defeated the Brewers of Section 2B.

The Red Birds’ Dominic Reed started on the mound, he threw eight innings to earn the win. He gave up five hits, issued three walks, surrendered two runs and he recorded six strikeouts. Miles Nablo closed it out with one inning of relief, he gave up one hit and he issued one walk.

Garrett Fischer went 2-for-3 with a double and a sacrifice fly for two RBIs, he earned a walk, stolen base and he scored one run. Riley Johnson went 2-for-4 with a triple and a sacrifice fly for two RBIs. Justin Anderson went 2-for-4 with a double for a RBI and Shawn Riesgraf went 2-for-4 with a RBI. Zach Hoffmann went 1-for-5 with a RBI and he scored a run and Matt Smith went 2-for-3, he was hit by a pitch and he scored a run. Derek Smith went 1-for-3 and Brandon Arnold went 1-for-4 with a sacrifice bunt. Adrian Turner went 1-for-4, with a stolen base and he scored a pair of runs and Logan Spitzack scored a run.

The Brewers’ Brook Lyter started on the mound, he threw 5 2/3 innings, he gave up 10 hits, issued one walk, surrendered five runs and he recorded one strikeout. Kyle Kingsley threw 2 1/3 innings in relief, he gave up four hits, two runs and he recorded two strikeouts.

Spencer Flaten went 2-for-4 with a double, he earned a walk, had a stolen base and he scored a run. Tanner Adam went 1-for-4 with a double for two RBIs and Jeremy Peschel went 1-for-3 and he earned a walk. Derek Dormanen went 1-for-4 and Mike Peschel was hit by a pitch and he scored a run. Joe Hallock earned a walk, Matt Oye earned a walk and Chris Clemenson was hit by a pitch.

REGION 11C (CENTRAL VALLEY/SAUK VALLEY LEAGUES)

SARTELL MUSKIES 1, RED WING ACES 0 (14 Innings)

The Muskies of the Sauk Valley League and Region 11C defeated the Aces of the Classic Cannon Valley League and Region 5C. It was indeed a pitchers’ duel, as this game was not decided until the 14th inning, nearly a four-hour ball game.

The Muskies’ veteran lefty David Deminsky started on the mound, he threw 10 innings, he scattered five hits, issued one walk and he recorded 11 strikeouts. The Muskies’ tall right-hander Max Koprek threw 3 2/3 innings in relief to earn the win. He gave up two hits, issued two walks and he recorded one strikeout. Lefty Johnny Schumer faced two batters, he retired one on a ground ball to the second baseman to earn the save.

Each team collected seven hits, Ethan Carlson went 2-for-7 with a big double in the 14th inning and he scored the game’s only run on an Aces’ error.

John Schumer went 2-for-7 and Tim Burns went 1-for-6 and he earned a walk. Jake Sweeter went 1-for-7 and Austin Gohl went 1-for-5. Adam Wenker earned a walk and he was hit by a pitch, Brian Schellinger earned a walk and Cody Partch earned a walk.

The Aces’ Teddy Tauer started on the mound, he threw six innings, he gave up three hits, issued three walks and he recorded seven strikeouts. Veteran lefty Keith Meyers, a draftee from Cannon Falls, threw eight innings in relief, he gave up four hits, issued one walk, surrendered one run and he recorded five strikeouts.

Josh Thygesen went 2-for-4 and he earned a walk and Brady Schroeder went 1-for-5 and he earned a walk. Kyle Blahnik went 1-for-5 and he was hit by a pitch and Mitch Matter went 1-for-6. Zach Garner went 1-for-6, Seth Yeatman went 1-for-5 and Adam Thygesen earned a walk.

KIMBALL EXPRESS 2, NEW PRAGUE ORIOLES 0

The Express of the Central Valley League and Region 11C defeated their foe the Orioles from the Dakota, Rice, Scott League and Region 3C.

The Express collected 10 hits, this was more than enough support for the Express pitching staff.

The Express right-hander Zak Wallner started on the mound, he threw eight innings to earn the win. He gave up six hits, issued three walks and he recorded six strikeouts. Alex Kendall, a draftee from the St. Joseph Joes, threw the final inning in relief, he issued a walk, but he retired two batters on fly balls and a ground out to earn the save.

Ben Johnson had a great game, he went 2-for-4 with a home run and a double. Scott Marquardt went 3-for-4 with a double and a huge RBI. Austin Ruehle went 2-for-4 and he scored a run and Brooks Marquardt went 1-for-3. Brian Marquardt, Kyle Winter and Joe Von Wahlde all earned walks.

The Orioles’ Nathan Sprouls started on the mound, he threw six innings, he gave up six hits, issued three walks, one run and he recorded 11 strikeouts. Jonny Houston a draftee from Prior Lake threw two innings in relief, he gave up two hits and one run.

Dan Novak went 1-for-4 with a double and Justin Novak went 2-for-4. Eric Wagner went 1-for-3 and he earned a walk and Zack Clark went 1-for-4 and he was hit by a pitch. Aaron Kes went 1-for-3, James Fuerniss earned a walk, Dan Shetka earned a walk and Jake Klein earned a walk.

KIMBALL EXPRESS 3, BUCKMAN BILLYGOATS 2

The Express of the Central Valley League and Region 11C defeated their foe the Billygoats of the Victory League and Region 8C.

The Express collected 12 hits, but struggled to get timely hits, as they they left many runners on base.

The Express’ right-hander Ben Johnson, started on the mound, he threw eight innings to earn the win. He gave up just two hits, issued one walk, gave up just one run and he recorded nine strikeouts. Alex Kendall, a St. Joseph Joe draftee threw one inning in relief to earn the save. He did give up two hits, issued one walk, one run and he recorded three big strikeouts.

Scott Marquardt had a good game, he went 2-for-5 with two big RBIs and Johnson went 1-for-4 for a RBI. Austin Ruehle continue to stay hot, he went 3-for-3, he earned a walk, he was hit by a pitch, had a stolen base and he scored one run. Adam Beyer went 1-for-4 with a double and Jordan Joseph went 1-for-4 and he was hit by a pitch. Brooks Marquardt went 1-for-4 and he scored a run and Brian Marquardt went 1-for-4. Kyle Winter went 1-for-4 and Matt Dingmann went 1-for-3.

The Billygoats’ Nate Dechaine, a draftee from the Nisswa Lightning, started on the mound, he threw 8 2/3 innings. He gave up 11 hits, issued one walk, surrendered three runs and he recorded five strikeouts. Matt Tautges threw 1/3 of an inning in relief, he gave up one hit.

Matt Kummet went 1-for-4 for a RBI and Shawn Lanners went 1-for-4 with a RBI. Jack Suska went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and Aaron Weber went 1-for-3 and he earned a walk. Lane Girtz was hit by a pitch and he scored a run, Matt Tautges earned a walk and Alex Funk scored a run.

SOBIESKI SKIS 5, SARTELL MUSKIES 2

The Skis of the Victory League and Region 8C defeated the Muskies of the Sauk Valley League and Region 11C. The Skis’ veteran right-hander, Tyler Jendro started on the mound, he threw a complete game to earn the win. He gave up just three hits, issued one walk, surrendered two runs and he recorded 10 strikeouts.

Collin Eckman went 3-for-4 with a huge double for three big RBIs. This gave the Skis their first lead in the sixth inning. Riley Hirsch went 2-for-3 with a double for a RBI and he scored two runs. Beau Hanowski went 2-for-4 with a RBI and he scored a run and Dan Marod went 1-for-4 with a double. Scott Litchy went 1-for-4 and he scored a run, Joey Hanowski went 1-for-4 and Dusty Parker scored a run.

The Muskies veteran right-hander, Adam Wenker, started on the mound, he threw 6 1/3 innings. He gave up seven hits, surrendered five runs and he recorded two strikeouts. Joey Atkinson, a draftee from the St. Joseph Joes, threw 1 2/3 innings in relief, he gave up three hits and he recorded one strikeout.

Tim Burns went 1-for-4 with a double for a RBI and he scored a run. Brian Schellinger had a sacrifice fly for a RBI and Jake Sweeter went 1-for-4 and he scored a run. Jace Otto went 1-for-3 and Andrew Deters earned a walk and he scored a run. This brings the Muskies’ season to an end.  

I am looking forward to next season already. Any changes that might bring us and being excited to see the work being done on the field for the future. Thank you for another great season.

PLATO BLUEJAYS 12, KIMBALL EXPRESS 5

The Bluejays of the Crow River Valley League and Region 7C defeated the Express of the Central Valley League and Region 11C.

The Bluejays’ bats were on fire, as they collected 18 hits, more than enough support for their pitchers.

The Bluejays’ Adam Prehn started on the mound, he threw six innings to earn the win. He gave up eight hits, issued one walk, surrendered five runs and he recorded four strikeouts. Mac Zachow, a draftee from Green Isle Irish threw three innings in relief to earn the save. He gave up two hits and he recorded three strikeouts.

Chris Odegaard had a big game, he went 5-for-5 with four doubles for two RBIs, he earned a walk and he scored four runs. Tyler Lang went 3-for-5 with a home run and a double for four RBIs and he earned a walk. Matt Odegaard went 3-for-5 with a home run for four RBIs and he scored a pair of runs. Ryan Moriarty went 3-for-5 with a RBI and he scored a run and Nolan Lepel went 1-for-4 with a RBI and he earned a pair of walks. Kyle Panning went 1-for-4, he earned a walk and he scored two runs and Zak Stockman went 1-for-4 and he scored a run. Dylan McCormick went 1-for-4 and he was hit by a pitch.

The Express’ Zach Dingmann started on the mound, he threw two innings, he gave up six hits, issued two walks, surrendered six runs and he recorded three strikeouts. Zak Wallner threw three innings in relief, he gave up five hits, issued one walk, surrendered three runs and he recorded one strikeout. Zach Laudenbach, a draftee from the St. Augusta Gussies, threw three innings in relief, he gave up three hits, issued one walk, surrendered one run and he recorded one strikeout. Andy Dingmann threw the final inning in relief, he gave up four hits, issued one walk, surrendered two runs and he recorded a strikeout.

Jordan Joseph went 2-for-5 with a big three run home run and he scored a pair of runs. Austin Ruehle went 3-for-5 with a RBI and he scored a run. Adam Beyer went 2-for-4 and Brian Marquardt had a sacrifice fly for a RBI. Matt Dingmann went 1-for-4 with a double and he scored a run, Brooks Marquardt went 1-for-2, he was hit by a pitch and he earned a walk and Scott Marquardt went 1-for-5 and he scored a run.

It was a pleasure to be able to cover the Express again this season, looking forward to next season already. The team and the fans sure make my wife and I feel like part of the team.
